Hello again all,
As for my earlier posting I did not define commercial vehicle. A
commercial vehicle is conciered generally 26,001 lbs. and over GVW. GVW is
different than GVWR. GVW is gross vehicle weight. GVWR is gross vehicle
weight registered. For example I took my test on a 26,000 lbs. GVWR truck,
I needed to explain to the tester that the truck was a 26,500 lbs. GVW
truck and that the test was valid. His trouble was on the regristation
card the weight said 26,000 lbs. but with my explination he accepted it.
That was a case that was open to interpretation of the law.
Other cases when you need a CDL are carrying radioactive material,
carrying more than 100 gallons of fuel, more than 12 passengers, all
hazardous materiuals, air brakes(even vehicles under 26,000 GVWR), tanker,
and double and triple trailers.
There are times you need a CDL even when driving a normal car depending on
what you are carrying!
At times some cases are even void. I know that here in Pa I drive tow
truck and I pick up a vehicle that has a trailer behind it. Here if you
look above I need a double and triple trailer endorsement on my license.
The way that I interpret the law here is that a vehicle being towed is an
"implement of husbandry" like a farmer pulling hay wagons behind his
tractors on the road. Now if I had two trailers behind a pickup truck I
would be in violation of the law. My advise is if you are the blue about
restrictions talk to the DMV, local poliece, and state poliece. Sorry to
be long winded but I wanted to explain this confusing area.
