You are right about the 5 min idle. A diesel depends on fuel to lube
the upper portion of the cylinder. When it's operating at load for
sustained periods the cylinder is relativly dry. By idling for 5 min.
after you allow the fuel to coat the upper cylinder thus avoiding a
"dry" unlubed re-start. Same goes for the bearings in a turbo. Some
manufacturers warn not to rev a turbo engine over 1000 rpm for the first
minute of operation. You are actually waiting for the oil to reach the
turbo, often it is the last in the engine to get full lube. They rev so
high it would be easy to ruin a "dry" bearing.
