Could someone out there with an M715 engine overhaul manual tell me what the
configuration of the parts are on the front end of the crankshaft?
After I rebuilt my engine, I noticed a noise that sounded like the timing
chain rubbing on the guide. Everything worked fine, so I figured that I'd
adjust the guide later. I've put about 500 miles on the engine since then.
This weekend I decided to fix an oil leak and discovered that the oil pump
drive gear on the crankshaft was not aligned properly with the gear on the
oil pump drive shaft. The face of each tooth on the crankshaft gear was
worn deeply. Hence, the noise I regrettably ignored. The steel gear on the
oil pump drive shaft was fine.
When I rebuilt the engine, I did it from my memory of the disassembly. My
memory faded a bit when it came time to reassemble the lower timing gear,
oil pump drive gear and oil slinger on the front of the crankshaft. My
Chilton's 61-71 Truck Repair Manual didn't help much either, as it covers 5
Jeep engines in each paragraph/step.
The only way it worked for me was to put the timing gear on so that the
chain was straight. The oil pump drive gear came next, with the splines
toward the front, and the no-spline end toward the rear. Finally came the
oil slinger, with the concave or cupped end toward the front. The timing
cover came next, with the crankshaft pulley sandwiching the whole thing
together.
It is painfully apparent that something is out of kilter--Does anyone have
detailed info available on the reassembly and configuration of these
components? If so, could you please explain it to me in as much detail as
possible?
Any help is greatly appreciated!!
