[MV] Pre-selective gearboxes

I was just looking around on Douglas Greville's page and came upon the
warning regarding pre-selective gearboxes. Having only driven a manual
and an auto, i have never heard of this type of transmission. Would
someone be so kind as to explain how they work/are driven?
