About those directional tires, which direction do they go?
A trip through the Historic Military Vehicles Directory by Bart Vanderveen,
and also seen in many war-time photos, finds that the "V" tread tires are
seen mounted both directions. It appears that the Americans mounted theirs
so the tire leaves a track pointing in the direction the vehicle came from
(to confuse things, we'll call that "frontwards") while the Canadians
mounted theirs just the opposite so that the tire leaves a track on the
ground that points in the direction the vehicle is going (hereafter
referred to as "backwards"). And the Brits, not taking any chances,
mounted theirs frontwards and backwards, sometimes on the same vehicle!
These are just generalities as from the photos I have seen there are
examples of the tires pointing every-which-way regardless of country. The
point is, which way should a directional "V" tread tire be pointed,
frontwards (tire track points to where you came from) or backwards (track
points to where you are going)?
Does it matter if the tire is mounted on a driven or undriven axle? How
about trailers? Is one way better for mud and the other way better for
pavement?
My truck has them mounted frontwards, what if I turn them around?
