As far as I can tell the Ferret does not use this system either, but
instead has a "bus bar" (for lack of a simpler term) which through
linkages puts pressure on only the band that corresponds to the
required gear. When the pedal is pushed the bar moves away from the
bands, the linkages alter to suit the pre selective gear and when
the pedal is let out pressure is put onto the required band. Thus each
band serves as a type of clutch (and as you say, are only small and
easily ruined).
This is why you are not allowed to leave a Ferret parked in neutral
as the bar springs will weaken, there will then be too little
"clamping" pressure to the band and it will burn out.
