G'day All,
As a collector of Canadiam Military Pattern
(CMP) vehicles, I have two maintenance manuals put out for
the Chev's. MB-C1 (early manual) states that driven tyres
should be fitted with the point of the "vee" striking the
ground first (as in tractor tyres) as this gives the most
traction. However, MB-C2 (later manual) states,

"NOTE!: When 'Chevron Tread' tires are used, tests have
proven that best all-round performance is obtained when the
tires on all wheels are mounted so that the 'open' end of
the Chevron pattern hits the ground first. Any loss of
traction has been shown to be negligible, wheras tire life
is very appreciably increased. Any previous instructions and
all directional markings on the tires should be
disregarded."

This manual was printed in Sept, 1943.

Also, it was usual for vehicles that were being used in mud
or soft sand to have chains fitted which negated to some
extent, any traction advantage of the "vee" or Chevron
hitting the ground first.

The problem with directional tyres is that for each vehicle,
the left hand wheels have to have the tyres mounted the
opposite way to the right hand side. Obviously, the spare
wheel had to be one or the other. The comment about the
Hummer's maybe that the wheels were fitted without thought
as to whether they were mounted for the left or right side.
Cheers,
