Hi Brian:
Idea behind slave plug was to allow a vehicle to buddy start another
under tactical conditions without opening/uncovering battery boxes and to
eliminate incorrect polarity hookup of the jumper to jumpee ( which happens
in parking lots all the time , never mind with bullets flying. ) Cross
connects are much more spectacular with 24 volts especially if the jumper is
an M-35 with 1500 amps. of cold cranking power. Another tactical use of the
slave plugs is to allow vehicle radio operation without running the
individual vehicles engines. This is accomplished by the running of a large
generator (or single vehicle) to provide the power to the other vehicles via
a distribution network that the military has in a box called (what else ) a
battery distribution box. In forward areas the supply would be behind a hill
with the cabling run over the hill to the tac vehicles on the forward face.
This way they could listen and crank (especially in real cold weather)
without giving away their position through thermal or acoustic signatures due
to occasional running to recharge individual battery sets..
