I can't say I know the cause but my 52 M38 also had this hop, usually
started when I hit a bump or pot hole in the road at higher speeds. The
whole front of the jeep would jump around and slowing down was the only
way to end it.

Finally added one of those stabilizer shock-like struts to the stearing
tie rods and that seemed to end any more hopping....
