Depending on the rubber, gasoline can also start to eat it, although years ago I
used it on motorcycle grips all the time. Try WD-40; it evaporates a lot more
slowly and doesn't seem so destructive sometimes. The idea about the hair dryer
seems good, too. You want to add some temporary elasticity to the rubber.
