Indeed they do not, however, for size and weight the configuration was the
only solution at the time and used extensively in similar designs.
It is surprising how little effort is actually needed to turn a camshaft,
having had a spanner on a few, once the heavy load of opening the first
valve from rest is overcome most of the energy is recovered by the valves
trying to close and it is possible to manually rotate the shaft quite
smartly.
