I probably will go see the movie. In fact I may even go in uniform (I am a
WWII reenactor and my unit has gone in uniform to similar events, sometimes by
invitation and for the hell of it on other occasions.)
<<The fact that we are there is not a political statement just a chance to
have some fun.>>
It may not be intended as a political statement but it could be interpreted as
one by others.
<< I hope we as a group of collectors are not getting too big of an ego
about our toys. >>
I don't see what my ego has to do with anything but, I take my jeep and my
reenactment unit to dozens of public events every year. This is done in honor
of and respect for the service and sacrifice of our nation's veterans. Sadly,
our efforts are not always viewed by others as being so noble. Perhaps I am a
bit overly sensitive about the politics that are injected into things that are
supposed to be billed as entertainment. Does anyone out there disagree that
the TV show MASH had a political slant to it? I love the show and still laugh
after having seen some episodes dozens of times but the disrespectful and
anti-military jokes and dialogue stand out very clearly to me. I am one of
the grumpy few who absolutely hated the movie Forrest Gump. The very notion
that some bumbling nincompoop like that is the sort of person who could earn
the Medal of Honor was extremely offensive to me. I take my military
collecting, reenacting, vehicle restoration hobby very seriously and I have
learned to be careful about letting others orchestrate the context under which
my efforts will be presented to the public. I think my original point is
valid. We as military vehicle collectors should do what we can to make and
keep our hobby more public but we need to be careful what we associate
ourselves with at the same time.
P.S. I hope the movie will turn out to be greatly entertaining and accurately
detailed. Not full of M-37s and M-38s in place of the original WWII vehicles.
Does anyone know if military vehicle collectors around the country were
contacted for the making of this movie?
