Here is a longshot from someone who knows nothing about M-37s. Check
your rear axle housing to see if it may be moving on the spring plate.
If your axle U bolts are not tight, then when you change direction and
apply power, the axle can twist in the U bolts. The spring center bolt
head stops the movement when it moves to the rear or front of the hole
that it sits in on the axle housing spring pad. I had this problem on
an old Bronco. However, I would describe my noise more as a clunk than a
bang.

If this is not it, then I would still look for something in the power
train that might be loose causing a component to shift when changing
direction.

Hey all:

I am once again back at the bar seeking wise advice :-)

On my 53 M-37 there is a banging noise when I change direction (i.e.
from forward to reverse)

I first suspected the universal joints, but on examination, they all
look and feel fine.

My next thought would be in one of the gear boxes, perhaps some sort of
adjustment? like a backlash or???

I have read over the TMs, but nothing jumps out at me.

any ideas?
