I remember the "jeep in a crate for $50" story going back to the 1950s.
Every year or so someone would come up with a new version and get everyone
all excited about it. It was on the TV news in Pittsburgh at one point
telling people that it was a hoax and don't give anyone any money. I had a
guy come into our machine shop to collect deposits so he could hire a semi
to pick up ten at a time.
Of course you could never pin it down to anything specific. The story was
always from "some guy down at the firehouse" and if you went there it was
really "his cousin who knew a guy" etc. etc. Someone ought to write a book
about it as an example of how rumors spread and are hard to stamp out.
Anyone else have a good "jeep in a crate" rumor story?
