The engine serial number is located on the block behind the oil filter unit on
the right side. You should see a little raised area there and that it where
it should be. In the event this area is blank then it is best to assume that
your engine is a replacement. Also check the block's casting number located
toward the bottom of the block, also on the right side by the oil pan, to see
whether you have a MB or GPW block. Good luck on your project.
