George,
My solution to the steel line problem was to purchase a quality Double
Flare flaring tool and fabricate my own brake lines. I use various lengths
of pre-made lines from the auto parts store. When I make a line I use
a new one that as close to the same length as I need, but long enough
to allow for cutting one end off to the correct length and double flaring it.
By using prefab lines one end is already flared. Bend the lines very
carefully so as not to kink them. A special spring type tool is available for
doing bends. You slip it on to where the bend will be, bend the line, then
slide the spring off. I don't use one, so I can't really say how good they
work. Do not use extreme force when flaring or you will split the tubing
or break the tit off of the special gizmo that you place in the line's end
when doing the first flare. Inspect the flares you make for splits or way
off center. If it's not a show truck, allow a little extra line length so you
can make another flare if you mess up. It's tricky, but I have made new
lines for several military and civilian vehicles.
