I recently bought an M-170 (1955 ?) with the intention of turning it into a
hot rock-crawling machine. But due to the apparent lack of information
surrounding this type of vehicle, it appears to be either completely un-
sought-after or rare-as-hell. So, I decided to restore this piece of history
to it's original splendor. My problem is that I have no idea as to where to
begin in the research. I'm looking for some type of photographic history of
the M-170 and have been pointed in the direction of a book called "Standard
Catalog of U.S. Military Vehicles 1940-1965" If anyone else has any other info
about M-170's or someone with a stash of parts, please let me know.
The vehicle itself is in relatively good shape, it has it's share of dents,
but they can be straightened or replaced with M38A1 or CJ-6 sheet metal. A lot
of this truck still seems to be intact including the original tail lights and
the drivers seat (with the brackets to secure the front of the stretcher) and
the tail gate (with the cut-outs and brackets to secure the aft handles of
the stretcher). Some parts are long gone however, like the spare tire and the
bar that secures the tire in it's mount.
I plan on a frame-off restoration, but am clueless as to paint scheme and/or
markings that belong on this animal. I am also concerned about the OD paint
itself, is there a difference in shades? Or is it simply a matter of UV
fading? (see, I told you I was clueless) I want to do this as correctly as
possible, but have only seen a total of three photos of M-170's on the
internet.
Much regards,
Robert Becker thieves
