>But the bearing has worn into the steel washer so that the
washer appears to be stuck to, or as a piece of, the spindle. No one
with a civilian model of Federal, with whom I have talked, seems to know
about these seals either. The Reverse Elliott axle number is as
follows: SAE 7040 8RCX 3100 L532. In an old truck repair book
(Audel's), there is a picture of a Brockway truck axle (reverse elliott)
that depicts a felt seal used. Anybody got ANY clues at all?<

Did that truck use roller bearings on the front? It sounds like there is=

the spindle, then a washer to support the felt washer, then another washe=
r
to support the other side of the felt washer and then the bearing race. =

Since the bearing race is shot already, it certainly sounds like you will=

have to pull the race off in order to get the felt washer off. Some heat=
=

would probably help get the race off but screw up the felt. If you can
save the washers?? (not destroy them) and get race off, remove the
washers/felt/ etc. Cut some new felt, possibly stack it up to get the
thickness, and reinstall it?? That sounds like the only reasonable
solution to me. =
