Shon,

Sounds like a good find. The MB and GPW did not have tailgates. It is not
uncommon to find them with the rear panel cut out and a CJ tailgate
added. As for serial number, did you check the left frame rail in front of
the left motor mount? The serial is stamped in frame there. It will be
GPW xxxxx, assuming of course, it is a Ford frame. It is not too
uncommon to find the dataplate and the frame serial do not match.
Also, check the engine serial number (hidden behind the oil filter housing)
on the right side of the block towards the front. If it is the factory original
engine, it will match the frame serial.

When you say original engine, I assume you mean the original type. This
may or may not be the case. Did the head have GPW on it? If it says
Jeep anywhere on it, it has at a minimum a postwar head. Check
immediately above the waterpump and in front of the head for a flat boss
with a serial stamped (rather than on the side as previously described).
If it has the serial there, it will be a post war engine.

Could you turn the engine over by hand or is it frozen.

The the wheels the two piece bolt together combat rims or are they
simply 16" dishpan wheels? All GPWs came from the factory with
combat rims. These were commonly replaced with CJ-2A/M-38/M38A1
standard 16" non-combat rims.

With the date of delivery of 10-42, I think Ford had ceased embossing the
rear with the Ford name in script, of course, with the rear panel cut out,
it would not be there.

Have you talked to the owner? How long has it been sitting? When was
it last run?

It is really hard to put a price on the vehicle without seeing it. Last
February, I bought a 5-42 DoD GPW for a friend of mine for $500. It
reqiured restoration (typically needed replaced front floor pan), but with
about 45 minutes of getting in my shop, I had it running.

Are all the body handles there? Top bows, back seat, correct
windshield and frame? Spare tire mount? All these contribute to the
value of the jeep. Venturing a guess, I would say the vehicle is worht
$500-1000, but again without seeing it, I couldn't say.

I am looking at a '43 Willys MB with typical floor rot, missing rear seat, top
bows, handles etc with a frozen engine (head is off and pistons and
cylinders are rusted). I am going to offer no more than $500.

Good Luck. If you get a chance send me some photos. I'd like to see it.

Hey Gang,

I ran across a GPW yesterday, and I want some input from some of you
Jeep
guys, as I am a Dodge guy and donAEt know a lot about Jeeps.

Here is what I found:

Data Plate Reads Ford GPW, Date of Delivery 10-42, serial number
69921,
has an original motor in it, winch on front, and some type of hard top
spot
welded on. A couple of rust holes in floor pans, but box looks ok, no
outside rust and tailgate is gone with piece of sheet metal across there
to
block off hole where top comes down. Original wheels and civilian tires
(flat).

My question is, what is something like this worth? I would think the date
would make this worth something, but like I said IAEm a Dodge guy not a
jeep
guy. But if the price was right I might become a Dodge and Jeep guy!

Give me any thoughts yaAEll have that might help. THANKS.
