TACOM does track by USA number, just not forever. While a battery
commander, our property book had serial number for some vehicles and
the serial of others. During my tenure, we had to get both USA and
serial entered onto the property book. Also, seems all of our records
had USA number recorded. These records went with the vehicle when
it went away (as did my wrecked HMMWV).

While contract information is deleted after so much time, all record of the
USA number is not deleted/destroyed. The USA number is as unique as
is the serial. In fact, the USA is the Army's assigned serial for the
vehicle.

Why do they need a USA number rather than just using a serial number?
I DON'T KNOW!!! I suppose it is something like the registration number on
an airplane. Easy to identify and mark on the vehicle rather some long
string of characters.

Good info, Jim. Thanks.

Is there anyplace I can trace this number, i.e. find out the
history/units of my vehicle?

Thanks,
