Over reving a diesel engine is also possible, if you shift down at high=20
speed to a low gear. (For example if you want to shift from the 4th to
the 5th gear and instead of the 5th you get the 3rd...) This is really=20
bad if you have a big truck and a synchronised gearbox.
The rods didn't strech. Before the rods stretch, the pistons will break.
The reason why the piston hits the valves is because at these too high
revs the valves don't close fast enough. Their return springs are not
made for such high revs.
