THE SITUATION:
The carb (Carter YS) was completely rebuilt and installed. The jeep ran
great for a few trips and now has developed a nagging problem of dying after
about 8-10 minutes of run time. It will not start for several hours after
it dies. THEN.... yesterday I tried to start it and it coughed and
sputtered running very rich then died never fully attaining a 'smooth' run.
It was very rough running and the garage started to smell of fuel. I
haven't been able to start it since.
OBSERVATIONS:
First, it was running, then died, then ran rough, now won't start. I also
noticed on the vent line just on top of the fuel inlet that fuel was coming
from that fitting. I've taken off the top cover off the carb. Fuel in the
bowl looks clean and no crud in the bottom. The float mechanism works fine
and shuts the needle valve completely. Blowing hard into the fuel inlet
with the float closed does not allow air to flow so I'm pretty sure it's
working. The vent line which is just above the inlet protrudes into the
carb cavity and is clear when blowing through it. But that's where the
excess fuel seems to be coming from. I also noticed that when I manually
activate the throttle linkage (with the top cover off) the fuel meter needle
in the down-draft area doesn't 'spray' into the venturi.
WHAT I'VE DONE:
I've shrouded the fuel supply line with a nomex shield to eliminate vapor
lock situations. The carb as mentioned is rebuilt and I have new fuel line
from the carb to the fuel pump. The fuel pump has been rebuilt and pumps
fine. I've installed new fuel line from the pump to the gas tank.
Furthermore, I've installed an in-line fuel filter which stays about 1/2
full all the time and is clear showing no dirt in the fuel. The only thing
I haven't done is take apart the gas tank. I did however spend some time
'swishing' gas in and out until the final swish looked great.
Any ideas on what it could be? or What I should do next?
I truely would appreciate the YS "Experts" opinion as I want to participate
in our local Veterans Day Parade Wednesday morning.
Thanks,
Scott
