[MV] Hep Me! (apologies to James Brown)

I am having what I perceive to be a fuel related problem on a 1942 GPW. The
engine was recently rebuilt and purrs like a kitten for a couple of hours at
idle or 20-30 miles. At some point it will sputter and die, but pumping the
accelerator or pulling out the choke will prolong the agony for a short time.
(this has happened after climbing a hill or driving a moderate speed for a
mile or so) Thinking it is fuel related, I have rebuilt the carb ( had it
rebuilt by a "pro"), rebuilt the fuel pump, blown out all fuel lines and
checked them for leaks, fuel tank is clean, fuel filter has new element and is
not sucking air around the gasket. Problem seems like float bowl is empty (but
do not know this for sure) and fuel pump is not sending any more fuel there,
but when trying to hand prime it after it dies, the pump does not send fuel
into the float bowl, much as it would act if the bowl were full. Has anyone
had a similar problem which they were able to solve? ( OR who wants a 42 GPW?)
