well, as i remember if the transfer is not air shift, it has overrunning
clutch for front drive, so if you are going forward there can be no
wind-up as you say. also even if there was it would still shift between
low and high as this is a totally different issue than going into front
drive. if you put in the clutch, there can be no load on low/high.
the wind-up issue would only effect front drive engagement and if you
are going forward this is not an issue. the gear ratios are such that
the rear tires turn slightly faster than the front. when converted to
air shift this is changed so all drive at the same speed.
so, if you can't shift low/high it almost has to be a linkage problem.
check the rod that goes into the transfer to see if it moves any at all,
i have seen these rust so that they feel quite solid.
