[MV] What Gear lube in Differentials for DUKWS?

Does anyone know which weight gear lube they originally used in DUKW and
CCKW differentials? The books all say 90w, some folks run 150w. But every
original one that I have looked at (and I have seen many) appear to be much
heavier. Is it a heavier lube or does it just thicken with age? It also has
a strange smell to it, which if you get on your hands will last for days.
