Same sort of situation here in Australia. I had my 1944 GPW comprehensively
insured under the 'Classic Vehicle' policy of NRMA (a leading Motorist's
organisation) which cost me 86 AUD (about 55 USD) per year, with a restriction
of 8000km driving per year. I changed it to another specialist classic car
insurer, Shannons, when I read the fine print of NRMA's policy, which said
that I would be paid *up to* (but not guaranteed) the 8500 AUD insured value,
and that I would not get to keep the wreck (assuming I was still alive).
Shannons would pay the agreed amount, no questions asked, and I would keep
the wreck. It cost me a fair bit more, but I was more comfortable with it.
I could have just imagined others bidding on my jeep, getting it, and picking
off all the best parts, whilst I was in hospital... :(
