Hello,

Fisrt of all, I like to introduce myself. Recently, we (my wife and I) bought a '54 DAF YA-314 army truck. It's a 4x4 3-ton standard dutch truck converted for firefighting use. This means that it's fitted with solid benches, a giant roof rack and lots of spaces to put things. We want to use this "thing" (6,5 m long 3,1 m high and 2,5 m wide) for vacations and other (semi) off road fun. Our goal is that the vehicle must remain as original as possible.
Since we live in the Netherlands and gasoline is very expensive, and because we want to visit other european country's the first major step is changing the hercules jxc gasoline engine for a daf diesel engine. I know that this means trowing away some originality but by keeping the original engine in stock for refitting in the future we think we're doing not wrong.
The question:
The truck has an empty weight of 6000 Kg (12000 lb), so the standard 102 Hp herc is just working too hard.
I already found out that a DAF DD615 145 Hp diesel engine will do the job, but with one major drawback. It runs max 2400 rpm against 3000 for the herc. At 80 km/h (50mph) the engine turns 2850 rpm. The diesel must do max 2200 rpm at this speed.
So, I am looking for a 27% increase of gear ratio somewhere between engine and tires.
I found some info on the "saturn overdrive" does anyone use such a overdrive and is it available in northern europe?
Some tech info:
Engine: Hercules JXC 282 cu 102Hp at 3200 rpm.
Gearbox: Warner gear AS11-T98
ratios: 6,4:1 3,1:1 1,7:1 1:1
Transf.gear: ZF A3500 ratios high/2wd: 1:1 low/4wd: 1:1,74
Axes: Timken ratio 1:7,2
Tires: 11.00x20

Changing the tires to 12.00x20 or 14.00x20 does't help enough.

Hope someone has answers..

regards, Richard Haarsma
