Dropping the tyre pressure gives you much more traction on soft
surfaces, but you must really drop the pressure, until the tyre
looks like a flat tyre.

This enlarges the surface of the tyre on the ground and helps that=20
the rotating tyre doesn't dig a hole in the soft ground.=20

You also have to take care that the tire with (nearly) no air pressure
doesn't rotate on the rim. Sometimes special metal bars inside the=20
tire were used to fit the tire on the rim.=20

Trial motorbikes also use very low tire pressures on soft ground.
They use "Reifenhalter" (tire holder?) to keep the tire on the rim,
even with only 5 psi air pressure.
