The basic rule is that the higher the octane number (if refering to gasoline
type fuels) the higher the compression ration (effective that is becaus a
turbo will raise the effective ratio) you need to get the fuel to
compression ignite. Think about it... in a spark ignition engine of higher
compression ratio you need higher octane gas to keep it from knocking which
is a function related to compression ignition.
Anyway, you could burn natural gas in a diesel, it's been done since damn
near the begining of diesel's.
