As a qualified electronics person, I have a deep fear and loathing of
designers who save money/effort by using any available metalwork for
their electrical supply return path. It is _always_ a recipe for future
trouble. One of the potential problems will result in blowing your
alternator's rectifiers whenever you turn on something with a high
resistance chassis connection. I've seen this particularly with cab
heater fans, but the source of the trouble is not always obvious and
treating the result only gives the fault a new toy to break.
Whenever I get a vehicle, one of the first things I do is add return
cables to all the major items. Belt AND braces - why not?
