I think that we're all very lucky that the current anti-surplus/ anti-
militaria hysteria has not always been around.
Can you imagine what would have happened to all those MBs and GPWs? They're
too dangerous to drive, of course. Prone to roll! They would've been
unceremoniously scrapped, historical value be damned.
I'm sure that the military Dodges are also killers. (No dual circuit brakes,
for example. Dangerous, I tell you!)
Mules? What good are they? Not fit for public roads. Scrap 'em!
If the DOT and federal bureaucrats had been around in force immediately after
WW2, we could all be collecting recognition models or photographs of the real
thing. Maybe an odd part. There would be no vehicles left.
I feel sorry for future collectors. Whatever we save will be around, but
almost nothing new (current) is coming out intact. And the future only looks
worse as far as collecting. I feel that it's only a matter of time before
this anti-democratic administration (or the one that follows) will ban import
of ALL MVs into this country, US made or not. If they can ban those nasty
looking "assault weapons" because they have bayonet lugs, even with the
powerful NRA against it, how long is a loose-knit group of MV collectors going
to be able to hold up legislation against importing Ferrets or GAZs?
Dan Rather will ask "What do those crazy militia nuts want with ARMOR?
They're up to no good I tell you!" and the public will buy it lock, stock, and
barrel. If, in fact, we (the public) even know about it until it's too late.
I try to save everything I can the hopes that if my son (4 years old today)
likes MVs there will be an MB or GPW in the garage for him to do.
Well, that's enough ranting and raving for the night.
Happy Holidays to all.
