I don't know about Jeeps, but GM had a 6 volt ring gear and a 12 volt ring
gear. The 12 volt one had more teeth, The starter pinions were made to match
with the 6 volt having fewer teeth and having a bigger diameter shaft so you
could not just swap the pinions.

All my GM's have 6 volt starters running on 12 volts. The only way to fly...
