I was surfing the Australian War Memorial Photograph database
(http://www.awm.gov.au/database/photo.asp), when I stumbled across a
photo of a capstan winch-like attachment which was mounted on the front
wheel of a jeep, possibly using the lug nuts. Take a look at negative
number 068818 or search for "jeep" + "capstan" in 1939 - 1945 to see it.
I have never seen nor heard of such a device. A jeep is shown pulling
it self up a steep hill by a rope using this "poor man's winch". Anyone
know any more about them? Was this a field improvisation, or were these
manufactured for that purpose? The big question: did they work?
Also check out negative number 021904, which I think is a Ford GP...
