I have used a similar method restoring the marks on combination dials from
safes. For a more permanent marking I found a "white out pen" that dispensed
correcting fluid to work rather well. It is easy to control the amount that is
applied and cleans up with alcohol. If the radio is painted with flat paint
the excess might not be easy to clean off so you might test it in an
inconspicuous place first.
