Now, about our 841 motorcycle. We have just purchased one which is
about 98% complete, and has been slightly civilianized by a paint job and
the addition of Indian logo's on the gas tanks. The Indian 841 was a shaft
drive motorcycle manufactured in response to War Department desires to have
a desert-dwelling motorcycle. Harley designed the XA, and Indian designed
the 841. The 841 is a transverse-V twin, that is, the V sits left to right
on the motorcycle, instead of fore and aft like the usual motorcycle
arrangement. It is 45 cubic inches displacement, and very rare. It is
unknown how many were actually made by Indian, but at least 1000 were
contracted for and Serial numbers exist up to 1056. We have posted initial
photos of the bike at our site, at
http://www.astory.com/militaria/841.html
and will post more when we get a chance. Since it is so rare, we will be
doing an on-line restoration documentation as we get it back in shape. We
can also use some help. We have lots of contacts already made, but if
anybody knows of any other 841 parts or literature out there, we'd be glad
to hear from you.
