1st series: Cab Over Engine (COE) that looks like a little school bus with
rounded rear corners
2nd series: Same as above with square rear corners (that is what we are talking
about. Only about 2000 made)
3rd series: Box mounted on CCKW (2.5 tonner 10 wheeler) deuce & a half Like
what they have today.
In GMC Nomenclature:
1st letter
A 1939 (as in AFKX)
B 1940 (you won't find any)
C 1941 (as in CCKW
D 1942 (as in DUKW)
2nd letter
C Conventional cab
D Amphibian (as in DUKW)
F Cab Forward (COE)
3rd letter
K All wheel drive (live front axle)
4th & 5th letter
W Dual rear end as in CCKW or DUKW
X Wheelbase that was not a GMC standard (early ones)
352 etc is a GMC nomenclature that specifies the general size and
the wheelbase.
