In WWII, and up until the pentomic unit designation came out in the 1950's
rifle companies in infantry regiments were lettered from A through M,
excluding the letter J. Companies A through D were in first battalion.
Companies E through H were in second battalion, and Companies I, K, L,M were
in third battalion. D, H, and M companies were the heavy weapons companies
of the battalion, having the heavy machine guns and mortars assigned to
them.

Probably done after the breakout in late August and early September of 1944.
Ordnance could not keep up with the demand for vehicles and units were
moving very fast across France. The theft of vehicles was so commonplace
that the restriction on bumper markings was ignored. Units started painting
their markings back on the vehicles to prevent theft. There is a pretty
well known photo of 28th Division Troops from the 110th Infantry parading
through Paris. All of them have their bumper markings painted very neatly.
