<< Mutt Owners,

If your Zenith carb doesn't idle well and you have to keep the choke out to
run at idle or low speed. Pop the plug out of the idle jet seat and back out
the idle needle-valve a bit (with a small screw driver) until the idle is
smooth, and it will alleviate the problem. >>

Joe is absolutely spot on with this advice. However, you may wish to add the
following to the guidelines:-

1. Before adjusting the carb, it is ESSENTIAL to make sure that the ignition
system is spot-on (correct gapping of plugs and points-if fitted) ignition
timing is correct and valve clearance is correct. Additionally, check out the
one that everyone forgets..... make sure that the air cleaner is clean, with
fresh oil.
Only after these checks are complete should any carburettor adjustments be
made.

2. The carb. should be adjusted with the engine at correct operating
temperature. Best way is to get the engine warmed up, then shut down the
engine (with the hood closed) for 5 minutes. This lets a cold carburettor
"adjust" to the ambient temperature.

3. If you have "un-sealed" the mixture screw, cap it later with a blob of
silicone sealant. It will keep the jet from shifting, keep the threads clean,
and is easily prised out next time.

4. It may be an idea to check the float level in the carb. if the vehicle runs
roughly. Out of all the carbs. I have opened up, I have yet to find a
correctly-set float level, and even the instructions in the -34 TM are
ambiguous unless you read them carefully (especially the section that deals
with the "drop" of the float).

Thanks, Joe.

My two "euros" worth.

Kind regards.....

Ken
