Interestingly, this idea was used by the Schreiders when they made their
trip from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego in a GPA amphibious jeep back in the
late 1950's.
One of the border crossings through a tinpot South American country was
holding them up because they did not have the correct paperwork for cars
entering or leaving the country. The border guard was sympathetic but would
not let them through for fear of being reprimanded by his superiors. The
Schreiders were worried that they had gone as far as they could when the
border guard came up with the notion that there were no such requirements
for a *boat*, and let them through!
