David...
<<What's the consensus on NDT tires versus other off road designs in dirt,
mud, or mud/sand mixes.

We've had discussions about NDT tires on the road before, however I'm
wondering how they compare off the road to some of the newer tread
designs such as MT (Mud terrain) designated tires. My gut feeling is
that the NDT's probably aren't too hot on rocky surfaces, but most of the
stuff in the midwest is mud or soft dirt.

Three questions you will have to decide for yourself -

Do you want to keep the military look for corectness?
What use of the vehicle / terrain you need to conquer?
What size vehicle are we talking about? - I'm guessing that it's Jeep / 1 ton
or there abouts as you mention MT's...

The cross section of NDT's or bar grips is rounded, this is no good in ruts
(hence the wartime use of snow chains in mud), however the deep, wide treads
are great when not restricted to said ruts.
NDT's will wear quicker than MT's, are noiser, crap on wet roads but look
right and are relatively cheap.
MT's on the other hand are 40 or so years superior in all aspects except that
they are not standard issue!
.... Can you afford an extra set of rims? If so, do like I do (for 1/4, 1/2
and 1 T size trucks ) and have the best of both worlds, though the quick
'Dukes of Hazard' wheel change is not as easy on 8+ lug wheels!

If you want a recomendation of a 15 or 16" MT that is excellent in mud as well
as being damn good on the highway - try the Yokohama Geolandar MT. With your
Sears card, they are about $110 each ( special order though as they are far
too aggresive for the shelf.)
