Can anyone confirm whether or not jeeps such as the MB/GPW and M38 were
originally issued with a hand-crank handle in the tool kit? It is clear these
vehicles are equipped for hand-cranking, but were they routinely issued a
crank handle?
Curiousity about my own M38 is my main motive, but also to settle an argument
about MB/GPW equipment. I was reading one of Ambrose's histories in which a
soldier who'd been at The Bulge is quoted as saying an officer had lost his
mind with fear. He knew the officer was crazed because he was trying to hand-
crank a stalled jeep to get away, which he thought was crazy because "everyone
knows" only old Model-T's had cranks. When I pointed out to a friend that
this was a harsh judgement (since that jeep would indeed have been hand-
crankable) my friend disagreed, saying they were not issued crank handles.
Hmmmm.... who's right?
