First of all the Marine Green we used was not the Forest Green I bought
and which I have some place and will send you the number of when I find
it. I know the color when I see it and am still looking. Quite right on
the six digit numbers and I will suggest some off a picture taken in
Okinawa in about 1955. Since Marines never throw anything away it was
probably in existence in the time period you are reaching for. The
Marines used yellow similar to International Harvester yellow and had
U.S.M.C. centered above the numbers on the
hood, both sides. ( numbers centered) Right now I don't recall white
stars. The Bumperettes
one on each end also had USMC on one of them. The
Division/Regiment/Battalion
markings on the rear quarter panels were red and yellow and for the
First Division is similar to their shoulder patch with a 1 in the
center, I assume. I will ask my friends in The Chosin Few what they
remember about this part.
As a corpsman, did he drive a jeep? I never saw a corpsman that wasn't
on foot. There were some jeeps on the withdrawl from Chosin and it
would make sense that the corpsman would be with the wounded that were
in the jeeps, but I'll bet he was alongside rather that in the jeep.
Anyway God Bless the corpsmen! There is a Museum at MCRD San Diego, but
no M38A1 and the people there who volunteer didn't seem to know much.
There are ex USMC vehicles on the List and you may get lots of data.
But I will monitor and get the promised data for you. Good Luck, Richard
