<<Information on wheel cylinders. Will the brake cylinders on the
M-38 interchange with the M-151 and the WWII jeeps?....>>

Gary........ here's some information for you. The wheel cylinders on the
M151-series and the WWII jeeps are interchangeable BUT WITH CERTAIN
QUALIFICATIONS. These are:-

The WWII jeeps and the M151A2/M718A1/M825 models all used the following......

front axle...... 1" diameter cylinders
rear axle........3/4" diameter cylinders

(yes, alright, so the VERY early WWII jeeps used 7/8" diameter cylinders but
don't worry about them at this stage, the chances of you having them is about
as great as finding rocking horse droppings)

The M151/M151A1/M718/M151A1C models used the following:-

front and rear axle.......3/4" all round.

For safety's sake, the M151-series should be exactly as listed above. Fatal-
Accident reports concerning MUTTS have in the past discovered that mixing
wheel-cylinder sizes, or using the wrong-size cylinder, has been a direct
contributor to the accident. (If you own a Mutt, now's the time to check out
whether yours are correct).

As far as interchangeability between the MB/GPW and the M151-series, the
cylinders themselves are identical, (brake pipe fittings, bleed screws,
mounting holes), so are the rubber seals and dust-boots. The difference is
that the WWII pistons are slotted (the edge of the brake shoe goes into the
slot) whereas the M151-series pistons have a flat-face.
What all this means, in a nutshell, is that you can use Mutt cylinders in your
GPW if you remember to swap the pistons over, and vice-versa.

I don't have any experience of the M38 and M38A1-series trucks; does anyone
know for sure whether/if the wheel cylinders are identical to the WWII models?
It seems unlikely that the Military would alter a proven unit like the wheel
cylinders (or am I on a different planet?)

Kind regards........

Ken
