RE [MV] M211 shimmy

NOTE: I am not sure that this went thru the 1st time

I replaced the worn tie rod on my CCKw and it started with exactly what you
describe. Go figure, sloppy - no shimmy, tight - shimmy.

As it turned out, it WAS an upper trunion bearing. The CCKW and I presume the
M211/135 have a tapered roller bearing in the top with a very thin tin plate
under it. The tin plate prevents all the grease from falling back into the
knuckle and leaving the bearing dry. Unfortunately, it holds the water up there
too. On mine, the race was pitted and the rollers in one area were rusty.
Remember, the rollers ride over the same area, back and forth. One side has
virtually no wear on it. I replaced the bearings (spent quite a while
straightening the tin plate as it takes a beating literally when you remove the
race) and adjusted the shims according to the manual and replaced the knuckle
seal. Also don't underestimate the knuckle seal. I have found that I can only
replace one side per year. If I did both, I could not steer the truck as it
applies so much resistance to steering.

Good luck
Dr Deuce
