Hi Rick,
Which later engine do you have in mind?
If what I've learned is correct if you go for the Cummins as found in the 800
series truck you will also have to change out the front end sheet metal as
the power plant is too long for the existing hood.
If you repower with either the Mack straight 6, or the Multi-fuel as the
military did, the sheet metal IHC put on in 195? is satisfactory, but it is a
lot of work. You will need to change:
Transmission (or gears there in) The Cont. has a direct high gear, the others
require an overdrive or you give up a lot of top speed.
Exhaust system
Radiator
Fuel tank(unless I'm badly mistaken the 6602 has an engine-driven mechanical
fuel pump, the others need an electric in take pump to supply fuel to the
injection pump, which the gas tank has no provision for)
You may run out of room for the exsisting power steering unit.
Probably run into some trouble with the remote throttle set-up for the
wrecker bed.
I'm not sure about the 5 tons, but on a deuce the clutch and pressure plate
change, as well as the front winch driveshaft assy between the gassers and
the others.
All this being said, our pals at Memphis Equip do this all the time, and can
not only tell you how, but supply the parts. I'd ask for Tripp, the number
is 901 774 0600.
By the way, you gonna have this done in time for our May Rally, right?
Its a lot of work, just out of curiosity, what is the goal? More power,
better fuel economy, higher speed?
Good luck,
David Doyle
