Quickly, from memory the first multifuels were powered by a turbocharged
Continental LDS-427 engine. Parts for this engine are harder to come by than
the other multifuels, and the engine has a reputation for being
trouble-prone. This was replaced with the naturally aspirated LD-465, which
exhausts above the left rear wheels much like the original REO OA-331 gas
engines. The LD-465 smokes like the proverbial freight train even when
running right. This engine was in turn replaced with the turbocharged
LDT-465. The LDT-465-1C has a reputation for having a louder turbo "whistle"
than the later LDT-465-1D, which some people like. I have trucks both types
of LDT and can't tell much difference in most conditions. The -1D's have
improved piston cooling, and if remember correctly, improved head gaskets,
among other changes. Despite the "multi-fuel" name given all these, I'd
stick with diesel or kerosene. By the way, none of these are 465 cubic inch
displacement engines, the 465's are 478 cid, but the 427 IS 427 cid.
