One day someone may be able to explain the seemingly random allocation of
"M" numbers that the US armed forces use. At one stage it was possible to
have just about anything under the M3 designation: from a submachine gun
to a tank (both a light and a medium!).
So why don't they choose numbers that don't clash? I think we are now up
to 3 totally different vehicle types called M109?

Doug
