If you have a little time to kill and are near the Jacksonville area you
really need to go to Camp Blanding. It is an army base that was used
durring WWII and is still in use by the National Guard. They have a Museum
right near the front gate that has all sorts of wheeled and tracked
vehicles that you can look at and touch as well as a C-47 and some German
artillery pieces. They also have some Russian tanks and APC's courtesy of
old "Saddam" himself. There is an old original barracks building that has
been turned into a place to display their collection of artifacts, weapons,
uniforms, and pictures. I was there about a year ago and really enjoyed
it. There was no charge to go thru but donations were accepted. They had
the local VFW guys volunteering to sit the museum on weekends so there were
some knowlegeable folks to talk to. If you take the road to Keystone
Heights (I think it is Hwy 21) it willbe on the right. When you get to hwy
16 take a right and head toward Kingsley Lake and you will see the main
gate. If you get to Goldhead Branch State Park you have gone too far. Get
a map in Jacksonville and you can't miss it. I really enjoyed it. Most of
your units that landed on D-Day went through Blanding.
