Some time back, I made up a batch of repro Harley WLA license plates.
In doing the project, I found out that there was a change over in March of
1942 where all MV's began using the later style stenciled reg number on the
hood. At that time, steel was in short supply, and the savings by not
making up thousands of license plates were considered worthwhile. There
was also a period where the unit markings were painted on the side cowl or
door of at least some vehicles, I would assume that this woujld have
changed at the same time.
