Hello list:
Can any of you MUTT people answer this for me. At about 3500 rpm's the
exhaust manifold glows red! Is this the norm?
Thanks for any info.....Dave

Not a MUTT person at all, however. . . . .
Almost certainly a timing problem as has been mentioned, either
inadvertently timed at Xº _after_ TDC static, which is not that
difficult to get confused about; or has stuck/seized/frozen centrifugal
advance distributor bob-weights. It is likely the engine is a bit
gutless too, a weak mixture sufficient to have the manifold red would
probably be almost unfireable and would have the engine spitting and
back-firing regularly.
The effect of ignition retard has the cylinder charge being exhausted
before it is entirely burnt hence a red manifold and loss of power.
There is a possibility that a recent re-build had the cam timed one
tooth out, this has been seen on many engines and isn't as desperate as
might be thought on a soft engine, typically produces a gutless engine,
carb and ignition settings have little or no effect, and the red exhaust
manifold can occur too.
I'd double check the ignition timing and distributor operation first.
